River: a natural stream of water, usually of considerable volume

A river carries water from a higher to a lower elevation, usually ending at some large body of water such as an ocean or lake. Rivers can be seen from space cutting through the landscape in many different patterns. Some rivers flow in a large, straight direct path, while most meander and wind slowly down hill. The White Nile River in the image below flows in a fairly direct path. However, the river has little branches and bypasses along the sides of the main flow. Often rivers branch when flooding of the river over a flat area has caused the river to flow over its banks and re-direct its path.
