Lake: an inland body of fresh or salt water

Surface water collected from rain and snow-melt flows downhill by stream and river, often times depositing into a lake. Lakes can form at depressions in the Earth or behind a dammed river. Most lakes are freshwater, but many lakes that form in basins are often even more salty than the ocean.
