Inlet: a bay or recess in the shore of a sea, lake, or river

A small, narrow opening in a shoreline through which water penetrates into the land is termed an inlet. Many inlets form coastal lagoons and marshes.
A very famous lagoon is featured in the image below. Venice, the city built on water, is located within the Venician lagoon formed by saltwater that
has penetrated through the coastal sand barrier.
