Basin: a large or small depression in the surface of the land or in the ocean floor

A basin is a depression in the surface of the Earth with no surface outlet. Lakes tend to fill in basins because all water flows downhill into the depression where it cannot escape. Not all basins fill with water, but all basins fill with sediment such as sand or dust.
