Beginner's Guide to Requesting EarthKAM Photos
-
Login to the ISS EarthKAM SMOC pages
using the user name and password you received via email.
-
We advise opening three separate Internet browser windows, one for the Status Page, the Map Page, and the Photo Entry Page, all found under the SMOC pages section.
-
Go to the Status Page
to find which orbits have deadlines that have not already passed. You can submit
photo requests for these orbits. For help with this page, visit the
Status Help
Page.
-
Go to the Map Page.
In the "Propagate orbits" section at the top of the page, select the group of
orbits that have not yet passed their targeting deadline and are of interest to you.
-
On the map, click a point along the red portion (daylight) of the orbit track.
Each click will zoom in further.
-
Once you have zoomed in far enough, select the "Select Lat/Lon" option below
the map. Then click along the orbit track at the exact location you want
photographed.
-
Check the information that appears in the "Selected Point" box.
Make sure that the Distance Off Track is no greater than 40 miles for the
50mm lens and 15 miles for the 180mm lens. For help with this, visit the
Map Help Page.
-
When you are satisfied with your selected coordinates, go to the
Photo Entry Page
and enter an unused codeword.
-
Enter the information into the photo entry form. To be completely accurate in
entering the information, it is useful to copy and paste the coordinates
directly from the Map Page
. It is also helpful to enter this information on a
Targeting Sheet. For help with this
step, visit the
Photo Entry Help Page.
-
Send photo request by clicking on the "Send Photo Selection" option.
-
Use the Photo List Page
to track your requested photo, using the RID number that was associated with the
codeword for identification.
