  The ISS EarthKAM Camera

The ISS EarthKAM camera is a digital camera which was flown on the Shuttle and is now used on the International Space Station. By communicating with UCSD and NASA via the Web, middle school students use the camera to take photographs of parts of the Earth. The following readings and activity will introduce your students to the camera and the images it can take.

  • All Camera Readings and the Activity (pdf)
Download all of the readings and the activity at one time.

  • About the Camera (pdf)
Use this one page summary to teach your students the advantages of digital photography and how photographs are taken after picture requests are received.

  • The Camera During Flight (pdf)
This reading provides information on how the camera was positioned on the Space Shuttle, which is similar to the current ISS set-up, and how commands and pictures are transferred to and from the camera.

  • Camera Lenses and Footprint (pdf)
Students learn how the focal length of the camera lens is directly proportional to the ground area covered and the resolution of photographs taken from the ISS.

  • The Shuttle Moves Fast! (pdf)
Guided by worksheets, students perform basic mathematical calculations that familiarize them with some of the issues of taking photographs of Earth from a rapidly moving Space Shuttle, which can be applied to the ISS as well.
