How To Print ISS EarthKAM Images

Any relatively new color printer should be able to produce good quality prints of ISS EarthKAM images. However, printing images directly from your Internet browser may not produce the best quality prints. For best results, you will need to download the image file and print it from an image handling application:

  1. For the clearest prints, use photo-quality paper (glossy or matte) and a printer resolution of at least 300 dots per inch (dpi).

  2. Download the highest or second highest resolution JPEG image from the Datasystem.

  3. Open and print the image:

    • The best choice of program for printing high quality JPEG images is a commercial image processing program such as Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, or other programs for handling images from a scanner or digital camera. If you have one of these programs, start it and choose File/Open and then browse to the location where you stored the downloaded image. To adjust the settings for your paper size and quality, choose File/Print and then Setup. Set all options/properties for the printing at the highest resolution available.

    • If you don't have access to a commercial application to print JPEG images, you can search for and download a freeware or shareware program from the Internet.

      • For Macintosh computers, the program JPEGView handles printing very nicely. It preserves resolution while fitting the image on 8.5 x 11 inch paper.

      • For PC computers running a Windows Operating System, ACDSee is a shareware program that provides control over the size and resolution of printed images.

  4. Print out the Metadata page for the image as well. You can do this by using the Print function of your Internet browser. The Metadata page will allow you to identify the image, and serves as a detailed reference for the image, shuttle, camera, and geographic information.
