Map Skills

Map skills are very important for ISS EarthKAM and for life. Various readings and activities have been provided to help your students learn and practice their skills with maps. You should use these readings and activities as appropriate for the experience and skill level of your students.

Students can access portions of several of the following activities from the Students: Exploring Maps section of this Web site.

Understanding Maps of Earth (pdf)
Students gain basic map skills, becoming familiar with the continents, bodies of water, hemispheres, latitude and longitude, globes, and flat maps of Earth.
Important Facts About Latitude and Longitude (pdf)
Students learn the concepts of latitude and longitude.
Understanding Latitude and Longitude (pdf)
By completing this worksheet, students practice identifying the latitude and longitude of locations.
Create a Tennis Ball Globe (pdf)
Students create a tennis ball globe, to see how a sphere like Earth can be represented in one type of flat map.
Identifying Continents and Oceans (pdf)
Students label a world map with the names of the seven continents and four major oceans. This activity is appropriate for younger learners.
Maps and Images Scale (pdf)
Students create a wall display using a world map and copies of ISS EarthKAM images. They study the scale of the map and compare that scale to the scale of ISS EarthKAM images, learning what can and cannot be seen in each. Students may want to use some of the Image Collections for this activity.
